Excellent appointment and totally outside of the political scene in NI, which is greatly to be welcomed. The NIHRC’s problems would have been much alleviated by such non political appointments, and long ago.
Prof. Micheal O’Flaherty has been appointed as the new Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. Prof. O’ Flaherty is a member of the UN Human Rights Committee, having been elected in 2004 and 2008. Prof. O’Flaherty will take up his position in September 2011, taking over from Prof. Monica McWilliams who has been the Chief Commissioner since 2005.
